        Sometimes in the sales process, to get something, you’ve got to give something. Part of gathering leads is collecting contact information, but in a world where people are inundated with marketing emails, spam calls/texts and every other form of advertising, they’re reluctant to hand out their contact information for just anyone. This is where lead magnets come in. 

        In short, a lead magnet is something you give away as an incentive for giving you contact information. Maybe it’s a coupon for a free service, maybe it’s a link to a downloadable instructional video, the key is that you come up with something your target audience is going to want, and get them to hand over their contact information in order to get it. 

        Our friend Hayden Rolfe preaches the SAGE gospel when it comes to lead magnets that come in the form of content. What is SAGE? In short, it’s:

  • Short – the content you hand out should be quick to consume in order to make sure that your audience members actually see it through, in order to get the most value and also build the most awareness around your brand
  • Actionable – the content should contain information that stands apart from the same old Google search results. They should walk away inspired or having learned something new, which will help them remember you as well
  • Goal-oriented – you can’t take your prospect all the way to their goal in just a few minutes, but the lead magnet content should get them through step one so they can envision the entire process
  • Easy – make it easily digestible, avoid using too much jargon, and leave your prospects with confidence that working with you will be painless

        If you’re further along in the sales process with a prospect, you can entice them with content that’s a little more tailored to them and intricate. But when you’re first casting your net, design your lead magnet to capture the attention of a general audience.
